Design Intent

Design has long had a love affair with organic shapes. “Harmony”, one of Stylesight’s trends for Spring/Summer 2015, explores the renewed connection with Mother Earth aiming to restore balance in our increasingly urban lives.

This trend focuses on raw materials drawn from the earth such as amber, agate and wood. Each of these materials has a unique set of properties, but all are made up of organic shapes, warm tones and undulating lines. These are the elements that will be explored within this project and taken into the knitted form.

Colour and texture are my main preoccupations. Colour being felt when looking at visual art and texture being the haptic element that draws one in. Using a mix of craft-based and machine knit techniques, this project brings these elements together to bridge the gap between craft and art.

I am inspired by the work of Nora Gaughan (knit), Elin Thomas (crochet) and Rosetta Santucci (artist).

Explore

Freeform knitting and crochet have been explored to look at how cloth can grow organically within the design process.

I have also explored how to create three dimensional fabric through pleats, welts, ribs and partial knitting. I am interested in how flat pieces of fabric can be distorted to create a wave-life motion.

Crochet can follow contours and as such is a great complement to knitted, denser fabric. It can be lighter and more open, as well as being used to piece various elements together. Embroidery has also be used to highlight details and provide another level of texture.

Outcome

Created in 3 weeks, this dress features machine knitting, hand knitting and crochet.

The cream top is made with wool and cotton. The front and back panel are stockinette stitch (Creative knitting machine), with two side panels which are 1x1 rib (Passap knitting machine). The shoulders and back have then been crocheted with cotton.

The skirt is a mix of pink and orange yarns in wool, mohair and silk. It consists of an identical front and back panel (Passap) and two pleated side panels (Passap). All elements have been joined by hand for perfect seams.

The belt has been created by a mix of crochet and freeform knitting (in cotton, bamboo, soy, seacell and wool). And the necklace is crocheted from cotton, bamboo, mohair and silk.
