To give us a sense of you as a designer, what is your major and why?

My major is in constructed textiles as I have always enjoyed the tactile feel of physical objects. When I was younger, I was drawn towards different textural elements and the depth of it's structure. I also use knitting to showcase and materialise my ideas, as well as to communicate with people.

 

“If things start happening, don't worry, don't stew, just go right along and you'll start happening too" or so says Dr Seuss. How do you get started on a new project?

I usually start off by collecting bits and pieces of items that are of interest to me, be it objects, materials or visuals. When I surround myself with assorted items, ideas will happen and I am able to take action immediately with the items, literally, within arm’s reach. Basically, the process of developing visually with my hands and mind will give me a kick start.

 

Why textile design? (Or maybe by the end of the course, why not...!)

I was doing my final year collection in my previous school, it was related to fashion, and while I was sourcing for fabrics, I came to the realisation that I wanted my fabrics to stand out from the rest. It was then; I became aware of my fascination with textiles and took it more seriously. I like to be able to explore different materials, textures, colours and techniques, it excites me. This discovery process also allows me to have a conversation with my audience.
