To give us a sense of you as a designer, what is your major and why?

I came into the program knowing I wanted to major in printed textiles. I'd given it a go during year 12 and knew I loved it. It's because I get to use my love for drawing to create artwork and patterns. The results are also instantaneous. It is so satisfying seeing a design you've worked so long on down on fabric.

 

“If things start happening, don't worry, don't stew, just go right along and you'll start happening too" or so says Dr Seuss. How do you get started on a new project?

Research! I begin by looking at imagery of what's already out there to fuel my ideas. Once I get a basic idea of what I want to do, I decide on a theme and try to merge the two ideas together. However, it doesn't always work out. That's what development is for!

 

Bricolage is about using and utilising what you find to hand. What tools or techniques do you find you can’t help coming back to?

I always go back to fineliners and gouache. I've been using fineliners for my artwork for as long as I can remember. They allow me to achieve precision (I'm a bit of a perfectionist) and come in varying thicknesses. I tried to convert myself to using ink, but I always come back to gouache. It's easy to handle and mixing colours isn't too difficult.
